
Here’s an article I wrote for the UK’s Mediatel Newsline. I write a monthly column for them and this reflects on the noticeable decline in the ratings for the top shows on Christmas Day 2015. The importance of Christmas TV has always been an anomaly compared to other countries and this article asks whether the fall in recent years is due to stale content, technology or societal changes. It led to a good debate on Twitter about what was going on, which also threw up issues around BBC funding and the lack of interest of many ITV advertisers in the Big Day, which may be leading to less interest in the schedules. You can read the debate here, which I have saved as a Storify timeline
