My August article for Mediatel’s Newsline was inspired by a particularly annoying run of press releases that seemed to me to be misusing research statistics.
The article (linked to here) is written in the style of Viz ‘Top Ten tips’ and so is designed to be ironic. I stress that, as a video commentary from a US observer debates whether I am being humorous or actually telling tales ‘out of school’
For the avoidance of any doubt, I am not advocating that readers do any of the things I describe, indeed I want to make people more aware of these practices, so they are not taken in when a press release bends statistics to support a spurious argument or promote an agenda. Do not try this at home!
