Research The Media is not active as I have retired, but I thought I would nonetheless pop back to say that a book I’ve been working on for the last year is now on sale at the link below. It’s called The Reality War – 2005-2025: How the Doctor Who Revival Transformed Television and is published by Ten Acre Books. As the title implies, it looks across the 21 years that the modern series of Doctor Who was on air. It’s the story of how Doctor Who captured the imagination of a new generation, dominated the TV ratings, invaded toyshops, bookshops, concert halls and cinemas, sold over five million DVDs, and even conquered America.

It’s also the story of Doctor Who’s transformative impact on television itself. Modern Doctor Who spans a period of unprecedented change within the TV industry. The show reinvigorated family viewing, trailblazed the BBC’s digital transition and lit the fuse of the Welsh creative economy. It popularised the role of the ‘showrunner’ and staged the biggest global simulcast ever for its 50th anniversary.

If you could let any Doctor Who fans in your lives know about it that would be much appreciated, although you don’t need to be a Doctor Who super-fan to enjoy it. The book is as much an examination of how TV and popular culture has evolved over the last two decades, with chapters looking at the BBC, fan culture, the streaming wars and how the writing and direction of TV has changed.
